Testimonials

  • “Chief Chavis’ love and passion for the game is contagious. She made my four years of varsity ball nothing short of excellent. Chief developed our team’s below average skill set into playoff contenders every season, without fail! She certainly knows how to make something out of each and every player. Chief’s coaching improved all aspects of my game, and made me a stronger woman off the court. As she is a successful former college player, Chief understands how to teach the game.  I will cherish those years playing for her forever! Too much fun!”

  • "Chief Chavis is the epitome of what you want in a coach and mentor. I’ve played sports since I was three years old and I can say without a doubt she’s the best coach and leader I’ve had. She pushes you to your limits and makes you always continue to grow. Her knowledge of the game combined with her background as a teacher allowed me to see the game in a whole new light. Then there comes the technical skills. Chief can still shoot lights out. I am lucky that I had her to teach me all the tips and tricks to make me a decent shooter. She makes your practice how you play so that you’re ready come game time. Anyone that gets to learn from her, will not only be lucky but I can guarantee will reach their fullest potential."

  • "I had the privilege of being Tamara’s college basketball coach for four years. During those years, Tamara proved to be an exceptionally tough, competitive, self-motivated individual on the court as well as in the classroom. I first recognized her competitive nature while watching her play during high school. Although oftentimes undersized at the position she played, she battled with bigger opponents displaying a toughness that she consistently brought to the court throughout her collegiate career. That toughness was fueled by the competitive nature that she developed growing up challenging boys in sports during an era when girls didn’t have the same opportunities to participate in sports as boys did. She has never been the type of person who would back down from a challenge. This was evident not only on the basketball court, but also in the classroom as she graduated with academic honors and went on to complete her Masters. When placed in disadvantaged circumstances, she responds with the motivation to prove to herself and to others that she can succeed. I don’t recall ever hearing an excuse coming from her mouth. Along with being a very goal driven individual, these qualities have enabled Tamara to continue to succeed in her adult life. She is an exceptional role model for young girls who have the desire to become successful young women."

    — Coach Lynn Plett, Former college coach of Chief Chavis at SJC

  • "When I was younger I would come to visit my family in Atlanta. I would hang out with my Papa and Mrs. Tam. She’s such a fun and cheerful person to be around. I look up to her in many ways from basketball to ways of living. When she coached, I remember her taking me with her to practice and letting me participate in some of the drills. She gave me the opportunity to experience a high school practice as a young girl. I had so much fun and I felt like I was apart of the team all because of Mrs. Tam. We have so much in common, she’s one of the most competitive people I know. I have so much love and respect for her. She’s accomplished so many great things in her lifetime, I’m so blessed to have someone like her to learn from!"
