Meet Chief Chavis
Tamara Chavis was born in Louisville, KY. She spent her early childhood living with her grandparents in Colorado Springs, CO which is where her grandfather put a basketball in her hands. From that point forward she fell in love with the sport. Tamara attended Louisville Male High school in Louisville, KY where she played on the women’s varsity basketball team as a freshman. The team had 4 years of winning seasons as well as many post season appearances which include district/region championships and runner-ups. Her high school team also had an appearance in the final four, elite 8 and sweet 16 of the Kentucky state championships.
Tamara received a basketball scholarship to attend Saint Joseph’s College (Rennselear, IN) where she started as a freshman and made immediate impact and contributions to the team as a leader both on and off of the court. She is sixth on SJC’s career scoring with 1,546 points and earned All-GLVC honors in 1999. Tamara is also third in free throws made (446), eighth in steals (194), ninth in scoring average (14.3 ppg) and ninth in field goals made (536). She is seventh on the single season list with 143 free throws made and holds the record for free throws made/attempted (19/23) in the GLVC conference. Tamara was most recently inducted into the Hall of Fame (April 2023) for her contributions to women’s basketball at Saint Joseph’s College.
Tamara received her BS in chemistry from Saint Joseph’s College and her MS in inorganic chemistry from Georgia Institute of Technology. Tamara is a retired science department chair, chemistry/forensics teacher, varsity girl’s golf and varsity girl’s basketball coach. Her golf team won a state championship as well as being runner-ups and placing in the top 5. They also were a part of many region championships/runner ups. The basketball team won the regional championship in 2008 under her coaching and she had two players go on to play at the collegiate level.
Tamara was in the education system for 17 years before she retired to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors. Tamara has always had a strong faith in Christianity and its principles. She believes in teaching strong foundations and fundamentals. Her goal is to be an inspiration to others and to show them that they can do anything they set their hearts and minds to. Tamara has always believed in giving back and helping to empower others, especially the youth of tomorrow. She strives to use her platform as a guide to help create strong leaders mentally, emotionally, physically and financially.
